This article is intended to express the necessity and importance of building the National Chungcheong Gugak Center for realizing the balanced development of local culture. Although regional branches of the National Gugak Center are operated in Jeollabuk-do, Jeollanam-do, and Busan, only these three operations are not enough to express the value of traditional arts of the Chungcheong area. Moreover, although traditional arts in the Chungcheong area have important cultural values, their status hasn’t been clearly established because there are no specialized research institutes or national center to enjoy it. Gongju City was the capital of ancient Baekje Kingdom, and has played a central role in the middle area as the location of Chungcheong Gamyeong and provincial office. In addition, Gongju is a cultural and educational city with a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Baekje Historic Site and mountain temple. The National Chungcheong Gugak Center, which meets all of these requirements and also fulfill the discovery, research, dissemination, enjoyment, and education of various traditional arts, is essential and necessary for realizing the balanced development of local culture.
