The article is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of evil in the novel “A Flame Out at Sea” by the Karelian writer, representative of the "new northern prose" Dmitry Novikov. One of the main problems of the novel is the question of the origins of evil and the ways to overcome it. The author considers several aspects of the manifestation of evil. First, Novikov touches on one of the "eternal" themes of philosophy - the question of the presence of evil in human nature. The author examines the phenomenon of evil primarily in its national manifestation, as a characteristic feature of the Russian soul. Secondly, objective ontological evil is widely presented in the novel as a general hostility of the world to man, and its particular manifestation is social evil. Finally, we can separately single out natural evil - the demonic dark principle, which is present in the mythologized space of the North. This type of evil stands alone, as it is not associated with morality. Despite the fact that nature can be hostile to humans, the harsh conditions of the North help to overcome subjective moral evil. Moral evil in the novel is presented in the guise of injustice, cruelty, self-affirmation due to the suppression of the weak, carelessness and irresponsibility, betrayal, violence. Novikov shows that real suffering is brought to a person not so much by external circumstances as by invincible internal evil, an inability to forgive. The main ways to overcome evil, according to the author's concept, are to cultivate compassion for all beings and a sincere faith.
