Objective: The study aimed to investigate the effects of a physical exercise with cognitive task on cognitive function and gait ability in the elderly with dementia. Methods: Subjects consisted of 100 elderly with dementia. They were divided into two groups, 39 elderly with dementia in a study group as physical exercise with cognitive task and 41 elderly with dementia in a control group as physical exercise with general task. Both groups performed treadmill training after exercise. Cognitive function was measured by Mini-Mental Status Examination - Korean version(MMSE-K) and cognitive strength by smart brain. And gait was measured by Functional Gait Assessment(FGA) and gait velocity by 3 axes accelerometer. To compare differences of the dependent variables between pre and post-tests within a group, the data was analyzed by using paired t-test. To compare differences between pre and post-tests of the dependent variables between the group, the data was analyzed using independent t-test. The tests were conducted under a statistical significance level of α=.05. Result: All dependent variables was statistically different from pre to post exercise in study group. In a control group, there was a significant difference in gait variables and there were no significant differences in cognitive variables. In comparison of the differences of the dependent variables, a study group improved significantly within all variables over a control group. Conclusion: Based on these results, we suggest that physical exercise with cognitive task would be effective in improving cognitive functions and gait ability in the elderly with dementia.
