Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) with inclined treadmill gait exercise on gait in patients with Parkinson's disease. Method: The subjects were comprised of 20 Parkinson's disease patients (study group, n=10; control group, n=10). The exercise program consisted of performing RAS with inclined treadmill exercise (30 min) and RAS without inclined treadmill exercise (30 min) once daily for five days per week for four weeks. Changes in gait speed, cadence, step length, stride length, and pelvic sway angle (X, Y, and Z axes), were measured using a three-axes wireless accelerometer and the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) pre- and post-exercise program to verify the effectiveness of the exercise. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare each group before and after the intervention, and the Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the groups after the intervention. The statistical significance was set at α=0.05. Results: In the study group, significant differences in all of the dependent variables before and after the experiment (p<.05) were observed. In the control group, significant differences were observed in gait speed, cadence, all axes of the pelvic sway angle, and the 6MWT, but not in step length or stride length. Between the two groups, the study group showed more significant improvements in all dependent variables. Conclusion: Our results suggest that applying RAS with inclined treadmill exercise provides beneficial effects on gait in patients with Parkinson's disease.
