With the enlargement of sewage treatment plants and the diversification of their engineering methods as well as the increased number of sewage treatment plants, the operation areas also require a high level of technology. Now we need to understand the global trends and evaluate the level of domestic technology. The trends of the operation of water treatment plants have been analyzed to develop from the existing maintenance efficiency improvement technology, life-span extension technology, process diagnosis technology, and integrated management technology to circulation analysis technology, optical method application, low power chip, miniaturization, multi-measurements, bio-sensors, manager control, energy saving control, online expert diagnosis, basin management, and smart water grids. The current technology level of the sewage treatment plant in South Korea is a little lower than that of the advanced countries in maintenance efficiency improvement technology, process diagnosis technology, integrated management technology, life-span extension technology, and automatic control technology, while advanced technologies are insufficient. Therefore, we need to enhance the industrial competitiveness of the environment technology using the excellent domestic information technology infrastructure. This paper will be helpful in understanding the global trends of the operation of sewage treatment plants and in presenting the direction of development.
