Through Moulton’s (1961), we got to know about the five educational views of foreign language education presented by American linguists in the 1940∼1960s, and analyzed in more depth the distinction between ‘about the language’ and ‘the language’ among these five educational views. At the base of this article, there is an idea that ‘Language Education is different from Linguistics’. Through the difference between knowing about language and knowing the language, we analyzed that Language Pedagogy is not an adjunct or dependent on Linguistics or Applied Linguistics.
Although great scholars of the previous century such as William Dwight Whitney (1868), Gouin Francois (1880/1892), Sweet Henry (1899), Bloomfield (1942), and Otto Jespersen (1924) were Linguists and Language Educators. In modern times, however, language education should not be designed, predicted, and determined by the discretion of Linguists.
Language behavior begins with listening and speaking, listening and speaking originate from language use, and does not originate from knowledge of language. In other words, the understanding of the language itself and the learning and education of the language are different.
