시선의 가시성과 욕망의 재현: 영화 〈베스트 오퍼〉를 중심으로

시선은 눈의 시각이 향하는 방향을 통해서 객체와 주체를 연결하는 선이 되어 사회적 상호작용의 가능성 혹은 잠재적 위협이 된다는 점에서 현대의 스펙터클 사회, 즉 시각 중심주의 사회에서 중요한 문제이다. 시선에 대한 선행연구는 시선에 대한 분석보다는 젠더, 정신분석, 사회연구를 논의하면서 시선을 언급하고 있어서 시선과 인물의 관계를 구체적으로 논의하고자 하는 본고의 문제의식과는 다소 차이가 있다. 연구의 대상은 시선의 가시성과 비가시성의 측면에서 흥미로운 텍스트이면서 선행연구가 거의 없어 연구의 필요성을 제기하는 영화인 〈베스트 오퍼〉이다. 본고의 연구 방법은 가시적인 것과 비가시적인 것을 구별하며 그것을 바라보는 시선에 주목하는 미셸 푸코의 ‘시선의 가시성’ 개념이다.
본고에서 영화 〈베스트 오퍼〉를 연구 대상으로 하여 ‘관계의 재현’, ‘구도의 중심’, ‘정보의 권력’이라는 세부 주제를 통해 연구 주제인 ‘시선의 가시성’을 고찰한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 〈베스트 오퍼〉에서 일방향의 시선은 재현과 신비에 대한 시선, 가시성/비가시성의 딜레마, 욕망ㆍ노스탤지어ㆍ타자에서의 시선 변화를 통해 재현의 가시성과 관계의 변화를 나타낸다. 둘째, 〈베스트 오퍼〉에서 훔쳐보는 시선은 욕망의 변화, 가시성의 전능함, 외부자의 관음증을 통해 표면/이면의 구도와 질서 중심의 전이를 보여준다. 셋째, 〈베스트 오퍼〉에서 조작된 시선은 욕망의 실패와 시선의 불일치, 이중적 비가시성, 가시성의 문턱, 수동성/능동성의 전도를 통해 정보의 불확실성과 권력의 전도를 드러낸다.
이렇듯 〈베스트 오퍼〉는 시선의 가시성에서 일방향의 시선, 훔쳐보는 시선, 조작된 시선을 통해 관계의 변화, 전능함의 전이, 권력의 전도를 보여준다. 이 연구의 결과는 시선의 가시성이 관계의 능동성/수동성, 중심의 핵심/주변, 정보의 인지/무지 등의 문제를 제기함으로써, 주체/객체, 질서/저항, 권력/소외 사이의 역설적 관계를 보여준다는 함의를 내포한다. 이 연구의 의의는 세 가지, 즉 시선을 구체적으로 분석하여 시선의 실천적 양상을 고찰한 점, 가시성의 역설을 통해 재현, 욕망, 권력의 모순을 알리는 점, 가시성의 우위와 질서 중심의 뒤집힘을 제기한 점이다. 본고의 기대효과는 재현, 욕망, 권력의 문제를 제기하여 후속 연구의 견인차 역할을 할 수 있다는 것이다.

Gaze is an important issue in the modern spectacular society, that is, the visual-centered society, in that the visual direction of the eye becomes a possible or potential threat to social interaction by connecting subjects and objects. Prior research on gaze refers to vision when discussing gender, psychoanalysis, and social research rather than analysis of gaze, which is somewhat different from the theme sensitivity of this paper that specifically discusses the relationship between gaze and characters. The object of this study is The Best Offer, which is an interesting text in terms of visibility and non-visibility of the gaze and a film that presents the need for research with little prior research. The research method in this paper is Michel Foucault’s concept of ‘visibility of gaze’, that is, to distinguish between visual and non-visual, and pay attention to its views.
The results of this paper’s consideration of ‘visibility of gaze’ through detailed topics such as ‘representation of a relationship’, ‘the center of composition’, and ‘the power of information’ with the film The Best Offer as the object of research are as follows. In this paper, the results of examining the research topic of ‘visibility of gaze’ through detailed topics such as relationship representation, composition center, and information power with the film 〈Best Offer〉 as the subject of research are as follows. First, in The Best Offer, one-way gaze represents visibility of representation and change of relationship through the gaze on representation and mystery, the dilemma of visibility/invisibility, and change of gaze in desire, nostalgic and others. Second, in The Best Offer, peeping eyes shows the composition of the surface/back and transition in the center of order through change of desire, almighty of visibility, and voyeurism of outsider. Third, in The Best Offer, manipulated gaze reveals uncertainty of information and conversion of power through failure of desire and disagreement of gaze, double invisibility, threshold of visibility, and conversion of passiveness and activeness.
As such, The Best Offer shows change of relationship, transference of omnipotence, and conversion of power through one-way gaze, peeping eyes, and manipulated gaze in visibility of gaze. The results of this study show that visibility of gaze raises issues such as active/passive, central/peripheral, cognitive/ignorant of information and embodies the meaning of paradoxical relationship between subject/object, order/resistance and power/alienation. The significance of this study is three things: to review the practical aspects of gaze by specifically analyzing the gaze, to report contradictions between representation, desire and power through the paradox of visibility, and to raise the superiority of visibility and order-oriented overturning. The expected effect of this paper is to raise the problems of representation, desire and power, which can play a leading role in subsequent research.
