Objectives: This article aimed to review the current dementia management projects in Korea, and analyze the roles of personnel with special focus on the capabilities required to perform the role of health education specialists as dementia personnel. Methods: A thorough literature review was conducted on dementia management project policy directions, dementia management projects, and the role and competency of health education specialists. The review also discussed current issues related to the role of health education specialists. Results: Health care specialists play a diverse role in the dementia management project, ranging from project coordination or common roles, to customized case management for patients and caregivers who require health education. The essential competencies for this role include health information analysis, ability to interpret health information leadership and crisis response, business planning, program development, method and data development, business operation, health care communication, competency. Conclusion: Health education specialists possess both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for the management of dementia. Given their expertise, they should be promptly included as essential personnel in dementia care centers enabling a more systematic community services.
