The study of speech accommodation is essential due to its significant impact on communication efficiency and the maintenance of social identity. The aim of this study is to compare and analyze speech accommodation (SA) and its gender influence during English speech production processes among Korean English learners and English native speakers. The experiment included 30 participants, consisting of 20 Korean English learners and 10 English native speakers. Participants were tasked with imitating both male and female model speakers, focusing on monosyllabic words. SA was assessed using the concept of “Difference In Distance” (DID) based on formants, categorized into SA strategies: “convergence,” “divergence,” and “maintenance”. Results suggest SA occurred between Korean English learners and English native speakers, indicating deliberate speech accommodation. Korean English learners demonstrated higher SA levels compared to English native speakers, with SA strategies varying based on vowel types. Furthermore, Korean male participants exhibited higher SA levels than females, while no gender differences were observed among English native speakers. These findings highlight disparities in unique speech (phonetic) schema and information processing between Korean English learners and English native speakers, underlining the necessity for diverse and dynamic experimental conditions in future research.
