Confucian scholars in the military regime were excluded from the important political power and under Yuan intervention they often lost their political power to non-Confucian scholars. They were isolated from the political power during King Gongmin and King Wu because of the reign of military officials. On the other hand non-Confucian scholars actively entered the government service and promoted their positions with taking advantage of disturbances of social order. Confucian scholars who complained about such a situation seized power with supporting Yi Seong-gye, the powerful milirary leader of carrying out a coup d'etat.
Confucian scholars tried to strengthen the system of the traditional four classes of society-scholars, peasants, artisans and tradesmen. The four classes should have worked for their own jobs. The scholars considered themselves as the class of ruling the country as officials after learning culture and reign trick. Confucian scholars tried to keep slavery strictly for comfortable lives of the literati.
Their suppressing commerce and trade, driving away luxury, dividing the lands among the literati, and restricting the possession right of peasants did not reflect the development of the private possession. This weakened the vital power of economy.
Confucian scholars intended to drive oue the common people, slaves,
Hyangni(響吏) and Seori(胥吏) from the government service and prevented them from getting such positions again, so that the literati could monopolize the government posts. They also tried to exclude the private rules and regain the public rules based on the public opinions which they aroused. They emphasized on legitimacy and social order to make a Confucian society. They also intended to realize the literati?centered rules with discriminating between male and female, between legitimate and illegitimate children.
For the spread of the Confucianism through education, Gyeonyeon-the lecture for the king was taken and Confucian lecturers were sent to perform Confucian scholars emphasized on Chinese culture and ceremonial music for the harmony of manners and music. People were forced to perform Confucian funeral and religious services.
Confucian scholars believed that Confucianism was the best religion and rejected Buddhism, fengshui and folk beliefs. They pursued the literati-centered society, especially a Confucian society.
