As one of the icons of English literature, countless fictional works have been devised around William Shakespeare. Shakespeare is a man with few documentary records and such an incessant desire for a fictional life of Shakespeare might be read as a response to discover the driving imaginative forces that produce a piece of writing, i.e., to find out things or ways that make writing possible. Specifically, this study takes a closer look at one film, Shakespeare in Love (1998), which imaginatively pictures Shakespeare’s writing life in London. By analyzing the images of Shakespeare in this film with its related ideas about writing, we will see how this movie narrates what Shakespeare does to produce a piece of writing and how it, in that process, disseminates the Romantic myth of writing. Writing scenes in the movie first give the impression that writing is an enchanted work, which is aroused by uncontrollable and magical powers like love. However, this movie can lead us to a new idea about writing-a process writing or a process theory of writing-which is, as this paper will eventually argue, a more collaborative and helpful and thus productive way of writing. Introducing this newly emerged approach to writing via Shakespeare, this paper, at the end, pictures new writing scenes and moving images of Shakespeare, which can in the future further help the practice of writing be more approachable.
