Recently, along with the rapid physical and emotional growth of adolescents, there is a growing interest in their appearance among adolescents. Beauty practice, which is made possible through easily accessible beauty information thanks to the development of mass media, is becoming more common. Also, as the age range of adolescents is getting lower, there is a growing concern as to the safety of their beauty practice and appropriateness of their perception. Accordingly, we made an effort in this study to analyze the actual condition of their beauty practices and suggest an improvement plan in order to contribute to the development of beauty education for adolescents.
For this study, we carried out a questionnaire survey with 407 students from 3 middle and high schools of Seoul and Incheon as research subject, and the samples were analyzed using SPSS WIN 25.0 program. Regarding analysis techniques, we conducted frequency and percentage analyses to examine the general characteristics of our subjects, and to analyze the beauty awareness and beauty practices of adolescents and to devise an improvement plan, we carried out χ2 (Chi-square) verification, frequency analysis, and One-way ANOVA.
As a result, the reason for their high interest in beauty was their desire to express their personality. However, 65.9% of the adolescents perceived the adverse side effects of cosmetic product because they did not fit their skin type. The reason seems to be that the age of using make-up is getting lower gradually, but most of them use cosmetic products without proper information and knowledge. Suggesting that, we have to realize that beauty education is no longer a one-time education but a practical learning that requires on-going care and professional education to be supported by schools and the government, so that the adolescents can pursue healthy beauty through safe beauty practices.
