The notion of “complete Shakespeare” has been challenged by recent developments in textual studies, including the ‘single-text’ editing practice and new discoveries in authorship attribution assisted by digital methodologies. As more and more texts find their way into “the complete works of William Shakespeare,” with equal claim to authenticity, a digital edition can be an optimal medium for the complex project of “complete” Shakespeare, alternative to the traditional single-volume edition restricted by the physical space of a printed book. Despite the growing importance and possibility of internet Shakespeare resources, both for education and for research, the digital editions of complete Shakespeare online have not been properly reviewed, especially in Korean Shakespeare studies. This article examines three scholarly websites that provide Shakespeare’s complete works online, MIT Shakespeare Edition, Folger Shakespeare Digital Edition and Internet Shakespeare Editions, evaluating their strengths and limitations for academic users. It also traces the evolution of editorial practices from “one” to “many,” proposing a new notion of complete Shakespeare as becoming rather than as being.
