This paper explores the new meanings Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream gains in Can Yücel’s and Moda Sahnesi’s Turkish translations and performance by emphasizing the compatibility of the play’s themes and storyline with Turkish culture. It first analyzes the unconventional translations of the play’s title, which reflect the intellectual discussions centred around the image of Shakespeare as canonical figure in the Turkish literary landscape. It then delves into the political contexts of the translations and creative choices, such as the use of local accents, slang, songs and idioms. Through close-readings and literary analysis of the translation and performance in connection with Shakespeare’s text, the paper argues that the rewriting process in the play’s Turkish reimagining brings the play back home with references to the common myths and stories in the source and target contexts. This argument is supported by the exploration of the connections between Greek mythology that Shakespeare invokes and Turkish myths of nature’s awakening. The paper examines the spring festivals celebrated in Turkey in connection with the play’s storyline and the lasting presence of the Dionysian tradition in analyzing the adaptations’ resonance with the Turkish audience. It concludes that Can Yücel and Moda Sahnesi both add another layer of intercultural and trans-historical dialogue to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream from the Greek context to Elizabethan England.
