Currently, China pursues the Northeast Project in a move to strengthen her influence in Northeast Asia, and Japan also tries to bolster her position as reflected in the recent outbreak of history textbook controversy. In this circumstances we Koreans face an imminent need to define the prospects of the Korean peninsular in the 21st century in a way to ask how we provide history education suggesting the vision of the Korea in the era of Northeast Asia.
Korean people's criticizing Japanese history textbook revisionism has nothing to do with their objectives of history education. This study is intended to examine issues involved in history education including history textbook description by comparing Korean history textbooks with Japanese ones, and then to suggest a new paradigm for history education.
Korean history hitherto has been characterized as the "National History", where the nation is transcendentally construed as a trans-historical subject. Now, in the 21st century, however, it should have a problem-oriented history as its characteristic feature. An alternative cognitive category within which the Korean history should be reconstructed as a problem-oriented one is that of the East-Asia. The East-Asia here does not mean an alternative subject substituting the nation, but a horizon of the problem-oriented history.
Current geopolitical situation of Korea, Japan and China particularly highlights the need of reformulating textbook description of Korean history. In other words, history education should be more inclusive than before to deal with issues faced by Korea to view her own history in the perspective of the East Asia beyond the boundary of the national history. Accordingly, a new paradigm for history education is required. While the past is a reality, history is a discourse. The paradigm for history education should therefore be shifted from education for historical knowledge to one for historical discourse.
