Purpose – This study examines factors that determine inter-organizational relationships quality and analyzes the effect of inter-organizational relationships quality on inter-organizational cooperation and firm innovation performance in industry-public research institutes cooperation in Korea. Design/methodology/approach– Based on the existing literature, we selected firm’s cooperative willingness, R & D capability, systematic support and incentive as factors that determine inter-organizational relationships quality. The relationship between these factors, inter-organizational relationships quality, inter-organizational cooperation, and innovation performance is set as 11 hypotheses. Surveys were used to collect data to test this study model, and PLS was used to test the hypotheses. Findings– Results reveal the following . First, a firm’s cooperative willingness, R & D capability, systematic support and incentive were found to have a positive effect on inter-organizational relationships quality. Second, a firm’s cooperative willingness, R & D capability and systematic support did not directly affect inter-organizational cooperation. However, firm incentives have a direct positive impact on inter-organizational cooperation. Third, inter-organizational relationships quality significantly affects inter-organizational cooperation, and inter-organizational cooperation significantly affects firm innovation performance. Fourth, inter-organizational relationships quality did not directly affect firm innovation performance. Research implications or Originality– This study is meaningful in that inter-organizational relationships quality promotes inter-organizational cooperation and this inter-organizational cooperation has a positive effect on firm innovation performance.
