Medical care is an essential contributor for student athletes. A focus on medical care gives student athletes access to the person who provides services and knowledge such as injury prevention and management and rehabilitation. Many colleges enlisted the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) provide medical care focusing on physical injuries. However, much less attention has been paid to understanding the mental well-being of their student athletes. Previous research has discussed the components related to the mental health of student athletes such as depression rate, anxiety, or eating disorder. However, there has been limited research that explores factors that lead to the mental well-being of student athletes to identify mental issues to properly access and intervene appropriately. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to review the factors that contribute to the mental well-being of collegiate student athletes. Three factors: 1) the athletic identity, 2) the pressure to succeed on and off the field, and 3) how injury plays a role to the mental health status of student athletes were reviewed and described. This review will help coaches and medical staff work together to make up a written plan to increase their student athletes’ performance and prevent a mental break down.
