Since 2020, thousands of infections and deaths have been reported and are still ongoing due to the COVID-19. As a result, consumers are looking to protect themselves with healthier diets, foods and functional foods. It has increased demand for functional foods, and the nutraceutical market is expanding domestically. Based on the information, we can anticipate “Hot Key Words” of functional food industry in Korea.
1. Immunity
As in the case of the MERS outbreak in 2015, the virus situation greatly increases the demand for immunity from customers. According to Kantar 2020, the consumption of immune-related health foods such as red ginseng and vitamins seems to have increased due to the virus situation such as COVID-19. According to the Korea Health Functional Food Association, the domestic health functional food market in 2020 was estimated at 4.98 trillion won, an increase of 6.6% from the previous year (4.67 trillion won). Among the health functional foods, the most sold functional ingredients were immunity-related products such as red ginseng, probiotics, vitamins (multivitamins and single vitamins), and omega 3 (maintains containing EPA and DHA). The combined market size was 3.21 trillion won, accounting for 64.5% of the total health functional food market. Such as unstable and unpredictable situations due to COVID-19 pandemic crisis, The customer need for the immunity system is expected to persist even after the end of the coronavirus.
2. Protein
