The domestic functional food market is operated mainly on health functional foods, and the production of health functional foods is growing rapidly, but the domestic market share is stagnant due to the increase in imports through direct overseas purchases.
The government aims to create an industrial ecosystem led by these foods, including customized and special foods (medi-food, age-friendly foods, alternative foods, pet foods), functional foods, convenience food (including meal kit), eco-friendly foods, and export foods as five promising areas announced in 2019. In order to revitalize the market in functional foods, a support plans such as improving the regulatory and support system are being prepared.
Health functional foods are divided into “notified health functional foods” that can be reported, manufactured, and sold without a separate recognition procedures and “individually recognized health functional foods” that can be manufactured and sold after recognition by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).
