The purposes of this thesis are to analyze the problems for college English in the education of liberal art and to study the better programs in liberal English curriculum. We have changed the systems for English education and taught the ‘practical English’ for communicative competence and to prepare the job findings. So we are facing serious crisis for liberal education and need to rethink English education of liberal art. We try to find more effective way to solve it. I think poetry is regarded as ‘proper’material for learning English in the university English classroom. I would like to suggest that poetry offers a rich resource for input to language learning. There are many advantages to teach poems for English education. The advantages include the increase of students’learning motivation, the understanding of literature, and the knowledge of humanitarian thinking. The future of English education is concerned with the knowledge of English and the insight and understanding for the world we live. In conclusion, the use of poetry in college English education provides a valuable linguistics experience as well as liberal education for students.
